RSU inks MOU with Dalhousie University to Strengthen Smart Agriculture Collaboration

In a significant move to advance smart agriculture and foster international collaboration, Romblon State University and the Dalhousie University – Faculty of Agriculture inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last July 19, 2024, at Dalhousie University’s Halifax Campus. The MOU was signed by RSU President, Dr. Merian P. Catajay Mani and Mr. Matt Hebb, Vice President of the Government and Global Relations at Dalhousie University.

Witnessing the momentous occasion were Congressman Eleandro Jesus F. Madrona, Representative of the Lone District of Romblon, and Her Excellency Maria Andrelita S. Austria, Ambassador of the Philippines to Canada, along with other representatives from RSU, Dalhousie University, and the Nova Scotia – Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.

This MOU marks a new chapter in the ongoing collaboration between RSU and Dalhousie University, focusing initially on the field of smart agriculture. The agreement outlines a commitment from both institutions to cooperate in the development of smart agriculture initiatives at RSU and the province of Romblon at large.

This strategic partnership not only strengthens the academic ties between RSU and Dalhousie, but also represents a significant milestone following RSU’s prior engagement with Canadian Higher Education Institutions at the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) Conference held in Vancouver last November 2023. This initial engagement was made possible through the initiative of the Commission on Higher Education – International Affairs Service, led by Atty. Lily Freida M. Milla, as well as Ms. Angel Cachuela, Trade Commissioner of Embassy of Canada – Manila, who facilitated that matching process that led to RSU and Dalhousie’s first meeting. This mission would have also not been possible without the unwavering support of CHED Chairmain, Dr. J. Prospero “Popoy” E. De Vera III.

In its commitment to academic excellence, internationalization, and sustainability, RSU and Dalhousie are set to embark on a collaborative journey that promises to bring innovation, sustainability, and growth to the field of agriculture and fisheries, ultimately benefiting communities in both the Romblon and Nova Scotia.

In commemoration of Earth Day 2024, Romblon State University (RSU) takes a stance with this year’s theme: “Planet Vs. Plastics.” This timely celebration comes amidst the circumstances of the triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—that threatens the ecosystems sustaining life on Earth.

Understanding the Triple Planetary Crisis

The triple planetary crisis represents a convergence of urgent environmental challenges:

  1. Climate Change: Rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and sea-level rise are disrupting ecosystems and endangering vulnerable communities.
  2. Biodiversity Loss: Rapid extinction rates of species due to habitat destruction, pollution, and other human-induced factors are leading to ecological imbalances.
  3. Pollution, Including Plastic Pollution: The proliferation of single-use plastics is a major contributor to pollution, especially in marine environments, where plastics harm wildlife and enter the food chain.

The Role of “Planet Vs. Plastics”

RSU’s adoption of this year’s Earth Day theme of “Planet Vs. Plastics” reflects a proactive approach to addressing the plastic pollution component of the triple planetary crisis. By focusing on reducing and ultimately eliminating plastic waste, RSU aims to:

  1. Raise Awareness: Through educational campaigns and outreach programs, RSU educates students and the community about the environmental impact of plastic pollution.
  2. Promote Sustainable Practices: RSU advocates for eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastics, encouraging responsible consumption and waste management.
  3. Drive Innovation: RSU supports research and development of biodegradable materials and innovative solutions to plastic pollution, fostering a culture of sustainability and technological advancement.

Taking Action at Romblon State University

At RSU, the commitment to combating plastic pollution is tangible:

  • Ban Single-Use Plastics: Implement a campus-wide ban on single-use plastics such as plastic bags, straws, utensils, and water bottles. Encourage the use of reusable alternatives instead.
  • Provide Water Refilling Stations: Install water refilling stations across campus to encourage students and staff to use reusable water bottles instead of purchasing bottled water.
  • Organize Plastic Clean-Up Drives: Conduct regular clean-up drives in and around campus to collect plastic waste and raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on the environment.
  • Promote Eco-Friendly Events: Encourage event organizers to use compostable or reusable materials for campus events and functions, minimizing plastic waste generation.
  • Introduce Eco-Friendly Packaging in Campus Cafeterias: Transition to biodegradable or compostable food packaging materials in campus cafeterias and eateries to reduce plastic waste.
  • Educational Campaigns and Workshops: Organize educational campaigns, workshops, and seminars to educate students, faculty, and staff about the environmental impact of plastic pollution and the importance of waste reduction.
  • Implement Plastic Recycling Programs: Set up designated recycling bins for plastics across campus and collaborate with local recycling facilities to ensure proper disposal and recycling of plastic waste.
  • Support Research and Innovation: Allocate resources to support research and innovation projects focused on developing sustainable alternatives to plastics and technologies for plastic waste management.
  • Collaborate with Local Communities: Establish partnerships with local communities to address plastic pollution beyond campus boundaries through joint initiatives and outreach programs.
  • Incorporate Sustainability into Curriculum: Integrate sustainability and environmental awareness into academic curricula across disciplines to instill a culture of responsible environmental stewardship among students.
  • Engage Student Organizations: Encourage student-led environmental clubs and organizations to take proactive steps in raising awareness and implementing solutions to combat plastic pollution on campus.
  • Monitor and Evaluate Progress: Establish monitoring mechanisms to track the effectiveness of plastic reduction initiatives and regularly assess progress towards plastic pollution reduction goals.

Working Together for a Greener Future

As we celebrate Earth Day 2024 with the theme “Planet Vs. Plastics,” Romblon State University invites everyone to join the movement towards a sustainable, plastic-free planet. Together, we can combat the triple planetary crisis and ensure a healthier, more resilient Earth for generations to come.

Let us embrace the spirit of environmental stewardship and collective action, working hand in hand to protect and preserve our precious planet.

Happy Earth Day!

RSU team launches UNICESS in Sibuyan, intalls Loren Ambassadors

President Mani, members of the RSU Main and various campuses, and LGU partner agencies joined forces in the final launching program of the University Community Empowerment through Sustainable Services (UNICESS) program at Lumbang Weste Covered Court in Sibuyan Island, Romblon.

Spearheaded by President Mani, the UNICESS program is an initiative of the Romblon State University that aims to foster deeper relationships with isolated and remote communities in the islands of Romblon.

The RSU faculty conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) with various demographic groups such as mothers, fathers, children, teens, and solo parents.

Questions were anchored on the four specific domains of the program namely: health, education, environment, and livelihood.

After the conduct of the FGD, the Memorandum of Agreement was signed by the RSU top officials and LGU partners including Head of Barangay, Hon. Carlos Galang, SK Chairperson, Hon. Milky Rey, and IPMR-SB, Hon. Lydia Regla Raet, along with chieftains of three selected houshold clusters, Panaguintingan – Chieftain Antonieto Rabino, Haguimit – Chieftain Ramon Regala, and Guin-Alan – Chieftain Daniel Reaño.

Pres. Mani delivered a message to thank the willingness of the community to open their doors to the RSU for the conduct of UNICESS.

“This is not the end of the UNICESS program. This is just the beginning. You can count on us to go back and become your partners in building and developing your communities,” said Pres. Mani.

Also in attendance was the municipal mayor of Cajidiocan, Hon. Marvin Greggy Royo Ramos, who expressed his profound gratitude to the RSU community for extending their support to the IP communities in Sibuyan, stressing that this extension service is instrumental to nation building and cultural preservation.

One of the highlights of the program was the conduct of the project “Munting Basura ay Ibulsa,” in which all members of the program received candy and lollipops and simultaneously placed wrappers in their respective pockets to symbolize proper waste disposal in their respective communities.

The university also distributed food packs containing coffee sachets, five kilos of rice, and medicines among 200 beneficiaries divided among three clusters.

As a part of the UNICESS launching, RSU also installed 10 new ambassadors for the LOREN project, which stands for “Leveraging Opportunities for a Resilient and Eco-Friendly Nation: A Green Philippines Initiative.”

The LOREN ambassadors will fulfill their responsibilities related to the LOREN thrusts of the programs, namely: Land Restoration and Conservation, Ocean Protection and Conservation, Renewable Energy Promotion, Environmental Education and Awareness, Natural Resource Management.

The UNICESS program began its series of launches in December 2021 with a series of launching programs in various remote locations, such as (1) Puro Island in Sta. Fe, (2) Cabibihan in Calatrava, (3) Dayongdong in San Agustin, (4) Pinamihagan in San Jose, (5) Cobrador in Romblon, with its final location in Sitio Panaguintingan, Sibuyan.

The second phase of the UNICESS program is envisioned to take place in the first quarter of 2024, in which the lead committee heads will present the findings of the FGDs, lay down projects and programs for the beneficiaries, and delegate roles and committees to all participating colleges and units.
