Two years after the outbreak of pandemic, the annual RSU Olympics was reopened with the theme “The Role of Sports in Maintaining a Better Lifestyle and Health in the New Normal.”
As a tradition, the main campus was the host of this year’s grandest sports event which ran from October 24-29. It was participated by 1,466 student athletes, 208 coaches, and 50 technical officials.
Top teams of this year’s competition were the CAS Gray Hawks (44 golds), Romblon Orange Jaguars (35 golds), CET White Wolves (31 golds), CED Blue Whales (27 golds), and ICJE Maroon Panthers (26 golds).
Due to the heavy rainfall ushered by typhoon Paeng amid the competition, outdoor matches came to a halt and winning teams per bracket were declared gold medalists.
A toll of 40 minor injuries were sustained during the games mostly from muscle sprain and cramps, the University Health Services Unit confirmed. The unit partnered with Red Cross Youth – Romblon Chapter in providing first aid response.
Sports Director Prof. Daniel Fabello expressed his gratitute to University officials, sports coordinators, tournament managers, technical officials, coaches, medics, and support staff for the event’s success.
“Ipinakita n’yo ang inyong suporta sa akin hanggang sa huling pagganap ko as Sports Director. God bless you all!” he said in a statement.
The 24th RSU Olympics will be the last season Fabello manage before his due retirement. In his stint as director of Sports Development Program, he oversaw the operations of the games since its inception in 1996.
Best players in winning teams will be picked for the varsity roster this forthcoming STRASUC Olympics at Cavite State University on December.
