Romblon State University took a significant step toward advancing inclusive and culturally responsive student support services as it explored potential collaboration with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) to strengthen programs for Indigenous Peoples (IP) students.
On February 13, officials from RSU met with Ms. Helen Grace Q. Bantang, Officer-in-Charge of NCIP for Tablas and Tres Islas, at the NCIP Office in Odiongan, Romblon. The meeting served as an initial dialogue to identify areas of partnership aimed at promoting indigenous culture, protecting the rights of IPs, and enhancing institutional support mechanisms for IP students within the university.
Representing RSU were Vice President for Student Affairs and Services (VPSAS) Dr. Gianinna Elaine Labicane; Ms. Patricia Rivas, Head of the Multi-Faith and Special Needs Services; and Mr. Dave Lota, Head of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Center.
During the discussion, both parties explored potential initiatives that may include cultural promotion activities, awareness campaigns on Indigenous Peoples’ rights, and the development of targeted support programs to ensure that IP students are provided with a safe, inclusive, and empowering learning environment.
Through partnerships with key stakeholders such as NCIP, RSU aims to foster a more responsive student support system that not only upholds the rights of Indigenous Peoples but also celebrates their identity, culture, and contributions to the academic community.
